college essay

Kaitlyn King College Essay 5-2-2013 Discuss a significant experience or achievement that has influenced your life. 250 to 500 Words At the end of every work day my energy is 100 percent drained, the kids are hyper, the sun is hot, and the day is filled with more or less organized chaos. However my job as a camp counselor, and later coordinator of Summer Fun Camp at my local community center, proved to be the most influential experience of my entire life. It gave me an overwhelming sense of community, a good work ethic, and a purpose in life that I never knew I would have. Those long, hot days were anything but relaxing, and at the time being a counselor just seemed like any other job, but if it weren’t for my job at camp, I don’t think I would be the same person I am today. Even though every day was a new challenge and I sometimes felt overwhelmed camp gave me a work ethic that I will always be thankful for. Working with my group of kids and the other counselors in my group, I learned to be a better leader, organizer, and communicator and I saw the benefits my group received the more work I put into each day. When I was promoted to camp coordinator after my first two summers as a counselor, it really gave me a sense of satisfaction to know that all the hard work I poured into camp was appreciated and made a difference. When I was promoted to camp coordinator I didn’t think I could do it. Being in charge of my group of 25 kids was a challenge, I couldn’t even imagine being able to handle the entire camp of 150 kids and 15 counselors. But when I started the new job, it made me realize that if I work hard enough I can tackle things that I never imagined I could do. I always knew that I loved working with people and working at a day camp was the perfect job for that. I got to work with kids every day that were energetic and enthusiastic, coworkers that were just as passionate as I was about their job, and parents who were grateful for all of our hard work. There was such a sense of community working at camp and it made me realize that that’s what kind of job I want in the future. I think that that’s the main reason I decided to go into education. I want a job where I can make a difference in kids’ lives and work with people that are excited about what they do and feel like I’m an important part of my community. My job has been a challenge; there can be difficult kids, difficult parents, and a lot of problems throughout the day. But with every challenge I learned how to think things through, how to use my strengths to my advantage and how to stay enthusiastic. It’s taught me so much about what I’m good at, what I value, and the person I want to be. I am looking forward to learning how to be a teacher, meeting new people, and facing new challenges with the skills I’ve learned from being a camp counselor.

Livng in the Past Article and Assesment

The article Do You Live in the Past, Present, or Future? taught me that it is important to have a balanced time perspective. It said that it is important to know the way we think because it can help your creativity flow.

My time perspective profile showed that I had the highest score on past posotives, my past positives was much higher than the ideal score. My past negatives was a 3.3 which is higher than the ideal score. My Present-fatalisticy score was a lot higher than the ideal score but was the average score of people who took the survey. My Present-hedonisti score was lower than the suggested score but close to the average. Finally my future score was the closest to the suggested score and was 3.23.

I think that this survey gave an accurate summary of how I really am. I think that my past scores were higher than the averages because I do tend to draw on memories from the past to guide me along. The survey suggests a lower past score however my highest score was past positives so at least I am focused on the happy memories rather than the negative. My present scores were both about average and only a little below the suggested score. I think this is accurate because I tend to focus on the past and future more than the present moment. My future score was the closest to the suggested score and I think it's accurate because I think moderately about future outcomes but I don't let them run my life.

In T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” the speaker uses abstract imagery, repetition, and self-deprecating tone to convey the speaker’s inner conflict. The speaker’s inner conflict is a constant struggle between his longing for intimacy, and his self-doubt that leads him to never be able to get what he wants. The imagery, repetition, and tone display the speaker’s self-loathing that leads to his hesitation to find love, even though love is what he desires most.

The abstract imagery the speaker uses paints a clear picture of his hesitation to fall in love because of his constant insecurities. The speaker could be revealing his cowardice through the image of the yellow fog that “Lingers upon the pools that stand in drains,” (18) .This image of the yellow fog not moving but just gathering up, could imply that the speaker’s cowardice does not just go away but is constantly stopping him from taking action. His hesitation is most likely caused by his low self-esteem. When the speaker is thinking about how other people perceive him he thinks “(They will say: “How his hair is growing thin!”)”. This image of a man that is aging and losing his hair suggests that the speaker does not feel good about himself and therefore thinks he is unworthy of love. The speaker is constantly struggling with his insecurities and his desire for love and feels like he is “being pinned and wriggling on the wall” (58). This image the speaker creates suggests how miserable of a state he is in; he feels trapped by his self-loathing and is struggling against it.

The repetition in the poem enhances the severity of the speaker’s indecision and also displays his strong desire for intimacy. When the speaker is talking about his search for love he repeats the phrase “Do I dare?”(39, 45). The repetition of this phrase shows how nervous he feels. It suggests that to him trying to find a deeper intimacy is something very dangerous because of his insecurities that lead him to believe he can ever have it. It is clear that the speaker want’s not only love, but a deeper intimacy with someone because when he talks about women he claims that he has “known them all already, known them all” (49). He repeats this phrase as he describes the women which suggests that these relationships were nothing but superficial and were not what he is truly after, which is for someone to really know him as a person.

The tone the speaker uses in his dramatic monologue displays his self-loathing nature and also how he never really believed he could find love. From the beginning he feels that everything will end badly he says “I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a platter,” (82). It could be that his negative attitude was part of the reason he never could find love. He also displays his self-loathing when he talks about the mermaids (who could represent love in general) and he says “I do not think that they will sing to me.” (125). When the speaker constantly puts himself down it leads him to be afraid of love because he never believes he deserves to have it.

The speaker want’s more than anything to feel a deeper connection with someone and to be in love, however his self-loathing and insecurities cause the inner conflict he struggles with throughout the poem.   The tone, repetition and imagery all enhance both sides of the speaker’s inner conflict. They help display the speaker’s deep insecurities and they also show his desperate desire for intimacy.   It’s apparent through the speaker entire monologue that he is never going to get what he desires most because he does not think he deserves it.

Presentation Reflection

I was really happy with how my group analysed the poem  Red Slippers" by Amy Lowell. It was really difficult for us to come up with a strong thesis at first, but as we got a better understanding of the poem we found a thesis that worked really well. I remember being at a loss for which literary devices to use to support our thesis but finally deciding that imagery, similes and polyphonic prose were the best ways to argue our thesis. I didn't understand polyphonic prose at all when we first started talking about them, but I'm really happy that I know now exactly what they are and what they mean. I think I learned a lot about working on a project and I think next time I will do a better job of being patient and slowly developing my ideas instead of constantly chaning them when I think of something better.
Over all I think I spent a good ammount of time on this project. I worked as much as I could trying to help develope the best possible powerpoint, all though I think we could have been a little more prepared for the presentation itself. Even if your powerpoint and your ideas are good, you still have to work hard to have a smooth presentation otherwise your ideas aren't represented as well as they could be. I think I learned a lot about understanding poetry and I developed better computer skills working with google docs, In the future I will maybe have a better plan on mapping out my work and presentation so I don't have to take so much time on changing things over and over again.

Poetry Presentations

I really like the analysis of the poem “Poetry” by Marine Moore. I think the author does a great job of conveying that the poem an author writes only has to have meaning to the author themselves. In order to create meaning in a poem the author has to connect with it otherwise it means nothing. I think it helps to understand all poetry when we know that no matter how abstract it may seem to us, it’s the authors’ vision and that’s all that matters. Moore says that a poet has to be like “a baseball fan” and admire their own work.

In Williams Carlos Williams’s poems he tends to describe everyday things with short concise lines. He doesn’t go very deep with his poems but he describes his subjects in a very vague way. Since he uses lines that are so short, he uses really strong adjectives to help create imagery. For example in “The Red Wheel barrow” he is describing a simple every day object but because he uses simple and descriptive adjectives so that the reader really has a good picture of the wheelbarrow in their mind. I think that the author’s idea that there is beauty in simplicity is true when it comes to poetry and is very evident in all three of the poems.

The group that presented “Somewhere I have Never Traveled” by EE Cummings gave the analysis that the poem is about the love of a women that the author would never have. I agree with this analysis and I think that the conceit metaphor really showcases this throughout the poem. I learned that a conceit metaphor is a metaphor that is revealed and used throughout the entire poem. In this poem he uses the metaphor of springtime in the entire poem. At one point we see him use the metaphor by saying “only rain can make a flower open so delicately.” He uses the conceit metaphor of springtime to compare himself to a flower and the women to the rain.

The group that presented “The Garden” and “L Art “by Ezra Pound gave a really good explanation of the two poems. They said that the author uses strong imagery and metaphors to show that you can’t take things for face value. I think this was a really good way to look at these poems because the author is describing that even if something has a fancy name or appears desirable ,those things can leave you with a feeling of emptiness. When the author says things like “Green arsenic smeared on an egg white cloth,” you can really see the imagery used to show that things that seam good can really be the worst for you. The poems also had a musical rhythm to help convey the authors message.

I thought it was so interesting the way Hilda Doolittle incorperated feminism in her poem "Helen". Since the author was a strong advocate for feminism it's no suprise that she would allude to the famous Helen of Troy. She uses this allusion to show that men can be totally overpowered by a stong women like Helen of Troy, whose beauty was said to have started a war, The author uses strong imagery to emphasise the beauty of Helen to show that even though she was incredibly beautiful she could still hold a lot of power.

When I was choosing the design for my blog I wanted to make sure the title was just right because it's the first thing someone sees when they are looking at a blog. I choose to do cursive writing for my blog title because in the article Establishing Mood with Typography by Carrie Cousins, it said that cursive tends to be a warm font. I would like to think that I'm a pretty warm and friendly person so I wanted to make sure my title represented that. When I choose my body text I made sure to pick something that was simple because the article said  "Using a simple choice will take the emphasis off the look of the text so that it is easy to read" (Carrie Cousins). I wanted to make sure that the posts were simple and easy to read but the title of the posts stood out so I used a font with curly letters because the article said that would represent something light and fun.
The first colors I choose were the colors of the background. I choose oranges, reds and yellows because these represent warm colors and according to the About.com article Color Psychology by Kendra Cherry, these warm colors give a feeling of comfort. I also picked a shade of orange for my title because in the article it said in chromotherapy orange was said to increase energy levels. I think it's a good idea when making a blog to keep the mood high energy, that way the reader is more likely to stay interested and not get bored. I also added some blue accents to my blog because the article said that these cool colors can be calming, and also I thought they would break up the warm colors so there was a good balance. The writing in my posts is written in purple because in the Color Psychology article it said that purple represents wisdom.
